OPENING GATES
lots and lots of them, all over the place – which is a big green
space, the soft green, maybe, of salt-marsh, with the weathered wood of the gates very clear
under open skies.
Someone’s always busy here, a gate-shepherd (shearsman, of sorts), crossing the
fields this way and that. Oiling, and mending hinges, attending to latches, making
sure everything flows –
(Did I say the poets are sheep – of course not! As soon herd cats . . . .)
keeping the waterways clear, too: the straight channels
shining blue through rushes and sedge
Quiet, and springing; the plucking sounds of things as they are: –
