On the train
9th May
Truro to Exeter
from one bluebell wood to another
bluebell Saturday
and by the rose-brown mudbanks of the Exe
not many oyster-catchers today
but those few
are busy and bossy –
beaks to the strandline
Dogs in naso-conference
a furlong away –
bum-and-tit-sniff sniffing
Tha’ss okay, tha’ss okay, tha’ss okay by us
Red cliffs blazen-away
in the half sun
Chestnut trees hypnotise
the watcher
into their flowering vicinities
May hedges are rosy-white
not broken-hearted yet
rising
plenteous as desire
from the earth - perfumed divas
Mud-flats near Gunnislake
smartened-up
by part-time sunlight
the tide clawing
big scratches through
the purely-lovely mud
and in the growing fields
greening-up into near-summer
see where the plougher often
leaves a senior tree
at the centre of the field –
green presider
over-looker of the field
sentinel stretching up to the sky
